Maxene Magalona Does Heavy Drama in GMA's Basang Sisiw

Have you watched GMA's new afternoon prime soap, Mga Basang Sisiw? Also, have you seen how Vicky, the psychotic and slap happy guardian, maltreats and tortures the young kids in this new "heavy drama" series? If you haven't watched it yet, you still have the chance to watch Vicky who is entirely evil to her very core and imagine giving her a slap across her pretty face! Seriously, who wouldn't feel annoyed and mad at the same time by watching her madness and cruelty to these innocent, young children?

GMA is now airing "Mga Basang Sisiw" which is a remake of the 1981 classic movie originally topbilled by Sheryl Cruz, Janice de Belen, Che che Perez de Tagle and Julie Vega.

Starring the beautiful and extremely talented young actress, Bianca Umali of “Tropang Potchi”, and very promising new faces, Renz Valerio, Kimberly Faye, Hershey Garcia, and Mico Zarsadias, these kids will make you cry as they try to survive life on the streets and deal with their unfortunate situation.

They prepared for their roles by having extensive acting workshops just for this TV series. Also, they said that Director Ricky Davao is very hands on to them and makes sure they are ready for each and every scene.

Set to breathe life to the other characters in the modern version are Lani Mercado, Raymond Bagatsing, Gardo Versoza, Mike Tan and Caridad Sanchez. Also, the versatile actress Maxene Magalona also takes in a very challenging role as a kontrabida.

Here's the plot of the story:

Froilan Sebastian's (Raymond Bagatsing) family can be described as picture perfect. However, his wife Olivia's (Lani Mercado) distant relative Vicky (Maxene Magalona) plotted to destroy their marriage by making it seem like Froilan has an affair with her. Because of this, Olivia together with their five kids—Justin (Renz), Faye (Bianca), Shine (Kimberly), Cha (Hershey) and Mickey (Miko)—decided to leave her husband. Froilan's family end up in a plane crash; only the five kids survived and they couldn't find Olivia's body.

Maxene Magalona, on her first kontrabida role as Vicky:

“It’s my first ever ‘kontrabida’ role. It’s completely different from my previous roles. I’m excited with the viewers’ reception of my portrayal! So far, I'm happy with the feedback I'm getting from Twitter,” says Maxene.

Whether Vicky's slapping the kids, brewing evil schemes, or taking cruelty to new levels, she will not let Froilan throw her out like a sack of garbage, so she torments him and his family out of rage and jealousy. Apparently, when it comes to a story of a man and two women, there is a very good chance that one of them will be messy, inconsiderate or just plain crazy.  If you’re a young mom, you obviously don’t want a woman who might hurt your children, but you especially don’t want someone who wants to get rid of you so she can take your place in your family.

I think Maxene is an effective kontrabida because audiences were compelled to send her hate tweets on Twitter and continuously draws praise for her superb acting skills. She is a really compelling villain. Sometimes I feel sorry for Vicky, sometimes I want to slap her.  She played Vicky's character with such amazing craftsmanship, and I believe she's capable of doing more--much, much more.

Of course, a story always comes with a message to the viewers.  Mga Basang Sisiw inspires viewers with the truth that no matter how bad life seems, someone always shares and understands one’s confinement in such a desperate state.

On the following vid, Maxene talks about the moral lesson of "Mga Basang Sisiw":

Maricel Soriano, Alessandra de Rossi and the late Bella Flores are just some of the best villain-playing actresses she points as her role models. She said she's very honored to work with seasoned and very talented actors and actresses as well.

“I’m honored to be working with some of the industry’s seasoned performers like Caridad Sanchez, Gardo Versoza, Raymond Bagatsing and Cong. Lani Mercado,” says Maxene.

The creative team is composed of Afternoon Prime Head, Roy Iglesias; Creative Consultant, Kit Villanueva Langit; Headwriter, Richard Dode Cruz; writers, Luningning Ribay and Christine Novicio; and Brainstormers, Gilda Olvidado and Liberty Trinidad.
