Luto Ni Nanay: A New Culinary Experience at Salu Restaurant

Women, or moms to be exact, have long been doing amazing  and incredible things in kitchens. It's time they get credit for it, too. Mother’s cooking is always best, yes? Agreed.

We celebrated mother’s day last May 14 at, Salu, wherein they also launched their newest offering to families. Coming home to the familiar scent of signature recipes that has been transferred from generations to generations is such a treat.

Salu owners, Romnick Sarmenta and Harlene Bautista, had this in mind when they thought of this newest experience that their restaurant is offering - LUTO NI NANAY.

Salu’s menu is generally a nod to traditional Filipino food, and it specializes in food from different parts of the Philippines. And above all else, the food at Salu is really, really good. Yeah, there's that. And, now, without further ado, let me share some of my favorites;

Um, Binagoongang Lechon Kare-kare is my ultimate favorite dish at Salu. Because, lechon. I prefer my kare-kare with lechon instead of ox tail, so I'm really glad that they added some crispy lechon to the mix. Yum!

With their offerings, I learned to appreciate my own country’s cuisine, and I hope more Filipinos will make an effort to discover the other dishes that our country has to offer.

“Whenever we eat out, Harlene would always wonder how the dishes that we ordered was cooked, thinking maybe she can cook it at home too. So we thought why not give that experience to the guests of Salu? An opportunity to learn a new dish and cook for their families inside a professional ktichen”, Mr. Romnick Sarmenta said. The couple also said they were inspired by a lot of moms in different parts of the country when they were doing research.

Authentic cuisines of different localities were thought to them by the ‘Nanays of Tanahan’, who are hailed to be the veteran chefs of the provinces. The kitchen was also trained by some of these veteran moms who flew in all the way from their municipalities to Salu. This is all done to keep faithful with Salu’s core philosophy of serving only the best and most authentic cuisines in the country.

Dine in guests could choose from three set menu - Luzon, Visayas or Mindanao. Each would already contain a list of viands, rice and single served drinks. Moms would be asked to cook at least two dishes from each set inside the Salu Kitchen, thus the name Salu’s Luto ni Nanay. To complete the learning experience, a Salu chef would assist the moms in their cooking, teach them techniques on how to make dishes better, tastier. A hand painted apron will be provided to moms right after the said activity as their souvenir to keep for their unique culinary experience.

If that isn't enough charm for you: Salu restaurant comes complete with set meals, y'all!

Set meals range from Php2,000-Php2,500 good for 5-7pax. A very affordable package that is mixed with a valuable experience not just to the moms but to the whole family as well. Another exciting thing about Luto Ni Nanay is the Mindanao Package. “We are very proud to be chosen to represent the ARMM region during the recently concluded Madrid Fusion. We were, they said, the only restaurant in Manila who serves a range of the most authentic Mindanaon dishes according to DOT. So we thought, let’s all make this experience of cooking the most authentic Madrid Fusion dish to our nanays”, said Mrs. Harlene Bautista. Madrid Fusion is the biggest culinary event in the country held last April 2017. Salu served Tiyula Itum, Beef Kulma, Pinaggang and Utak-utak to the delight of many.
