Smart Parenting Mom Workshops 3: The First Year of Life

I had a great opportunity to attend the Smart Parenting Mom Workshops 3, held last Sunday at Discovery Suites in Ortigas. It was an afternoon filled with informational talks about “First Year Of Life.”  The topics include the following; Infant massage, Baby sign language and Breastfeeding.

In this workshop, I've learned a lot from three experts who shared their insights to guide parents on how to navigate their baby’s first year.  They have crafted a day of fun and enlightening workshop during what may be a stressful time for moms.

Dra. Jamie Isip-Cumpas, a lactation consultant and member of the Breastfeeding Committee of the Philippine Pediatric Society, tackled feeding tips and essentials, breast feeding and breast pumping. Her talk gave light to the benefits of breastfeeding both for mothers and babies, as well as knowing the best time to start weaning. Aside from the benefits of breastfeeding, you can also save thousands of pesos. Yay!

I learned a lot about the advantages of Baby sign language from Quennie Sullano-Gavan, a baby sign language instructor and owner of Baby Talking Hands. Que discussed further ways to communicate with baby before they can talk and how to teach them the signs. Now, I'm teaching my baby the "milk" and "mommy" signs.

The final talk was from Dra. Roselyn Balita, owner of Little Lamb’s Pediatric Wellness and a professional infant massage instructor. She discussed the importance and benefits of infant massage and demonstrated on how to massage a baby.

TIP: Use natural oil such as VCO/virgin coconut oil, grapeseed oil and sunflower oil, instead of  manzanilla or mineral oil which can burn your baby's skin. You can also start doing infant massage as early as newborn because during those times when babies are fussy, mom-and-baby bonding makes everything better.

Aside from the informative talks, great takeaways and meeting new friends, all participants were treated with sumptuous buffet, exciting raffle prizes, and gifts from their generous sponsors. Thank you to Smart Parenting for having me and sharing a day of bliss by making a keepsake that I will be able to take with me as my journey into motherhood continues.

“We strive to make it our daily mission to help parents raise a child who is curious, independent and resilient. It’s a tough job! So we hope workshops like this will give them answers and complement their own parenting style,” said Leah Nemil-San Jose, Smart Parenting’s editor in chief.
